What is Service to You Lord? By Carol Mungai
Or is it to have my name called out in a large gathering amid a tirade of adjectives that I could not merit for it is in Christ I live and move and have my being or is it to have the merit of God as You say, “well done good and faithful servant.” Is it to have my name emblazoned on a screen somewhere with radio announcements going out that I will soon be in town and yet I have and am nothing to proclaim except the only Name worthy of proclaiming; i.e. Christ as the multitudes sang “Hosanna Hosanna to the Highest!” as He entered Jerusalem . Is Service to you satisfactory when men are applauding me with a standing ovation when I have just lifted up a song of praise and adoration to you and is heaven applauding or has sorrow filled your heart for we have just spend one, two, three hours of your time; (a gift to us) entertaining men in Your Name, for what have I to offer if not Christ crucified and risen as the only hope for and of man. Is service to you when men hang a placard or lay a stone with my name outside a building in my honor and epitomize me but forget that in everything I do, it is all for the glory of God and that I can do nothing without You but with You I can do all things. Have we served You well when we gather in elaborate buildings with choreographed lighting and perfectly tuned music but hearts out of sync with You? We seem to have everything else in order but what really matters. Sincere love for one another, the lost, the ones left on the wayside of life. Is it to receive recognition when I walk into a room and receive a seat at the front of the building? Is it to have the music I penned by Your grace, played on radio, TV, and or the internet and it ‘blesses’ people? What is the service that truly pleases You? Lord sometimes I worry. I worry that what we as Your children call service unto God is not pleasing to you at all. I worry that we have missed the mark, I worry that in pursuit of men’s approval we so easily forget Yours. I worry that in many of our worship services You have no place of honor or recognition though we mention Your Name and sings songs to or for you, our hearts are far removed from You. I worry that we love our lives more than we love You. I worry that the pleasures of this world have enticed us so and misdirected our hearts focus, I worry that we have diluted the faith, I worry that we have made it more complex for one soul to come to you by the laws and regulations we impose on people and our self righteousness just like the Pharisees would do, I worry that our love has grown cold, I worry that many of those of us you call Your children, whom You delivered out of darkness into the light have forgotten about others living in that darkness that need You, I worry that as Keith Green, Your son, (now home with You) sang, we are Asleep in the Light.” I also worry that we have assimilated ourselves with the world so much in our love, devotion and service to You that even the world cannot tell the difference within our gatherings, we do the same things the world is doing. I worry that the world systems seem to dictate our actions more than Your Word. I worry that we have lost our edge, our cutting edge. Lord I worry and I grieve. But most of all Lord I worry that while we are doing all this we are doing it in Your Name and it saddens me that if this then is so, dear Lord we have really grieved You. Dear Lord can it be said of me that I will lay down my
life for You. Can I be counted with the men who were stoned, sawed in
two,
drowned, killed with the guillotine, counted as foolish all because
they chose
You. Dear Lord let me know Your heart and Your heart alone, grant me a willing heart to obey You though it cost me everything, though I stand alone, Father please grant me the resolve, the courage, the devotion to You and You alone, for you found me when I was nothing and made me something far more valuable, You laid down your life and I don’t mind laying down mine for You.
