Kenya Rakes in Sh73.6 Billion from Tourism

Kenya received Sh73.6 billion in tourism earnings last year with the sector recording a higher number of visitors.

The revenue was 18 per cent more compared to 2009 when tourism brought in Sh62.5 billion a sign that it had beat the 2007 best year benchmark. In figures released on Monday, 1.09 million tourists visited Kenya against a projection of 1.2 million for the year

This was a 15.1 per cent rise in arrivals compared to the previous year when about 952,000 visitors came calling.

“We are happy with the results even though we slightly missed what we had projected. This makes 2010 our best year once again after 2007,” Tourism minister Najib Balala told journalists in Nairobi.

In 2007, Kenya received slightly over one million tourists making it a record in the industry.

Hopes on capitalising on this momentum were diluted in 2008 when the country plunged into violence following the disputed presidential election results in the early months of the year.

As a tradition, international arrivals in 2010 were dominated by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at about 860,000 tourists with cruise ships only bringing in a paltry 508 visitors to the country.

Over half of the tourists came into the country for holiday while about 17 per cent called for business and conferences.

Done very well

Among the key markets, tourists from the United Kingdom led followed by those from the USA and Italy.

Regionally, Kenya received more tourists from Uganda and South Africa while Indians dominated the arrivals from Asia.

“India has done very well and it’s a sign that the change of strategy has paid off for the industry. However we still need to put in more money in the new markets like Russia and Middle East to attract high spending clients from them,” said Mr Balala.
